About 7th Grade Band
In 7th grade students will expand upon their musical knowledge from the previous year. Students will learn and explore more complex rhythms, time signatures, chord structures, tone production, listening awareness and overall fundamental development of musical concepts. There should be a sense of independence started among students relying more on themselves instead of always waiting for the teacher to explain every detail.
To help build independence and expand upon students knowledge, we will be using a warm-up packet that has been created from several different resources such as, the nationally recognized Kennesaw Mountain High School Band program. This packet works the fundamental development that students need to be musically successful. Also, it provides enough information for the students to be able guide themselves through it without feeling overwhelmed. Sheet music will also be used to reinforce the students strengths and weaknesses as players and as a group.
For the first time, students will be evaluated this year on their playing and performance on three selected pieces of sheet music. The evaluation will happen in March and is called "Large Group Performance Evaluation". This event is judged. There are 9 different musical judges and they give our program a rating of Superior, Excellent, Good or Fair. The tradition and our goal at Pine Mountain is to receive Superior ratings from all judges. Our students play well and we want others to recognize their achievement.

Students have been working to master the concepts of long tones, chords and range expansion. We are working in small manageable chunks to learn the concepts correctly. Air speed and embouchure steadiness is key to these warm ups.
Students should be able to perform exercises 1-7 in their warm-up packet,C, F, Bb, Eb and Ab concert scales without any hesitation. Also, pep tunes, the Star Spangled Banner, and concert music. Students are working to master articulations, phrasing, dynamics and understanding of balancing the ensemble to hear the melody vs. accompaniment. Tests will occur in written and playing form. The tests can be recorded through Charms, electronic device or one on one with a director. Students will be tested every two weeks. Unless a holiday/break occurs then we will resume after the holiday/break. Ask your student to demonstrate what they are learning in class. You should hear a clear tone production, consistent tempo maintenance (the beat does not slow down or speed up) and overall understanding of how to play the exercises. Talk with your kids about what they are playing and how it should sound. They should be able to use their knowledge to teach you. |
