About 6th Grade Band
This is a very exciting time for 6th grade students! They begin their journey of learning a musical instrument and understanding more about the world of music. Students will start with the very basics of music reading, instrument maintenance, posture, rhythm, tone, tempo, timbre, and how to create music alone and in a group. Students will learn the importance of how success can be achieved as long as the group works together toward a common goal.
Students will begin their year in the Essential Elements 2000 beginning band book. As the year progresses, students will be given other musical resources to challenge their abilities. The musical selections will challenge their range, flexibility, endurance and listening skills. It is our goal that by the end of 6th grade students will be playing a grade level higher. We encourage students to work hard, face challenges head on and set goals that make them a better musician and person. We look forward to sharing with our students the joy and love of music.

Our Learning Process
|
Note Recognition, Rhythm Recognition, Tempo, Dynamics, Phrasing, Breath Control and
Continuing - Posture, Proper Instrument Carriage, Hand Position, Embouchure, Sound Production and Instrument Maintenance. Students will begin producing short melodic songs. These songs should help build the students understanding of the 5 notes we are continuously working on. Once all students are successful with the 5 -10 notes, we will move into full band pieces. When it comes to practicing at home, students are asked to make that judgment. We know how busy life can be so they are to choose when to take their instrument home to practice. You should see it at least once a week and you should hear at least 30 mins of music. Whether it is great or not. We promise it will begin to sound better in a few weeks! Ask your child to demonstrate what they have learned from us. They should be able to teach you what they have learned. You may even try it if you would like! Joining in on the experience will help you understand what struggles they may be facing and how to appreciate how far they will go with it after a few weeks/months. |
